CALL TO WORSHIP
WE WORSHIP OUR DELIVERER,
JESUS CHRIST WHO CAME TO US TO RESCUE US, CHANGE US, AND BRING US INTO HIS KINGDOM
“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold and my refuge,
my savior; you save me from violence.
“For who is God, but the LORD?
And who is a rock, except our God?
“The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock,
and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,
“For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations,
and sing praises to your name.
2 Samuel 22:2-3, 32, 47, 50
...so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
TRUST THE LORD HAS GRACIOUSLY COME TO ME, IS RADICALLY CHANGING ME, AND BRINGS ME INTO HIS PRESENCE
So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel,[the face of God] saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” GENESIS 32:30
THE GREAT STORY
In the climatic event of his life, Jacob is all alone on the shore of the Jabbok when a mysterious figure wrestles with him all night. Jacob later recognizes that this man has been none other than God himself! Jacob has been struggling all of his life - with his brother, his father, his wives, and his father-in-law - but now he is in the ultimate struggle with the LORD and Jacob can do nothing but hold on as he cries out for blessing. In this amazing episode, Jacob must admit who he is and in so doing confront his sin (v.27).
In this powerful Christophany [a preincarnate manifestation of the Son], God surprisingly encounters, powerfully transforms, and graciously delivers Jacob. And Jacob will never be the same. In fact, he won't even be Jacob anymore - but Israel [He strives with God or God strives]
THE GREAT NEWS
The very good news here is to see how in Jesus Christ, the LORD has also encountered, transformed, and delivered us.
In amazing grace, the Lord Jesus, the God-man, lowered Himself down to ENCOUNTER us here on earth. We didn't find Him but He came looking for us. He did not come to battle us but to conquer the sin that was killing us. Victorious on the Cross, Jesus Christ radically TRANSFORMS everyone who believes in Him. We are reborn as new creations and are also given a new name - child of God, co-heir with Christ, and saint. This transformation of regeneration continues in sanctification as God the Holy Spirit continues the work in us to shape us in Christlikeness.
The Lord has not just set us free from sin and separation but DELIVERS us to righteousness and life united with Him and lived in His presence.
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. COLOSSIANS 1:13-14
